Scarborough Wombarra currently have patrol teams that patrol the beach on Sundays and Public Holidays from the September school holidays to Anzac Day. Patrols run from 10am to 5pm, and the roster is broken into 2 shifts per day, 10am to 1.30pm, and 1.30pm to 5pm. The club also assists Wollongong City Council in patrolling the beach on some Saturdays during the peak of the season, from 11am to 3pm.
With 49,000 volunteer patrolling members keeping our beaches safe nationwide, Surf Life Saving Australia has a responsibility to ensure each and every one of them is equipped with the most up to date training and qualifications. That’s why every year, all of our qualified lifesavers undergo a process called Skills Maintenance.
This guarantees that their lifesaving skills are in sync with current scientific research and literature in drowning prevention, first aid and beach management. It also ensures they are fit enough for active patrolling duties.
A Bronze Medallion qualified lifesaver has to demonstrate, at least annually, that they can:
Members that hold additional qualifications such as Advanced Resuscitation, First Aid, Spinal Management, Inflatable Rescue Boat Crew or Driver, need to also show they meet the skills maintenance requirements of these qualifications too. It’s a huge undertaking to ensure that every year our lifesavers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and fitness to patrol Australia’s beaches.

In order to patrol the beach members (and potential members) must first obtain their Bronze Medallion or Surf Rescue Certificate. Scarborough-Wombarra has the in-house resources available to run these courses and get potential members the necessary accreditation.

Lifesaving is at the heart of what we do, and we encourage our members to participate in patrolling duties. Members are given the opportunity to further their skills or pass on their lifesaving knowledge to others.
Our Club may be small, but it is a popular beach for families, surfers, beach goers, locals and visitors alike. Volunteer lifesavers in red and yellow, patrol the beach and keep people safe all through summer.
Each year, we ask for volunteers to patrol the Scarborough Wombarra beach on the designated holidays during the summer season –
Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and Australia Day.
